The Tragic Crash
Your old nemesis has arrived, the Coffee Crash. All coffee drinkers know of and hate the Coffee Crash, but what causes it?
The first main cause for the Coffee Crash is that the way we digest coffee causes abrupt swings in our blood-caffeine concentration. Within 30 minutes of ingestion the caffeine concentrations in our blood have already peaked and the body begins to eliminate caffeine and its metabolites in quick order through urination.
To make matters worse, the sugar, cream and/or artificial sweeteners we add to coffee are also very dehydrating (not to mention calorie dense!). Dehydration leads to a number of negative consequences such as sluggishness and headaches. It's no surprise dehydration is also one of the main causes of hangovers.
